Exmoor Zoo

Exmoor Zoo is a local friendly attraction. It is home to some unique and very unusual animals which can only be seen here and nowhere else in the UK! Located just off the A399 HR link road, it is less than twenty-five minutes away and is in the beautiful rural North Devon countryside just by the side Exmoor National Park.

Over 60 exhibits can be viewed, all arranged on the zoo trail which contain some 150 different species from all around the world. Activities that run through out the day at about half hour intervals, some of which are encounter sessions which introduce you to special animals such as tarantulas and snakes.

There are always free quizzes with completion gifts for the children and every month a different themed quiz occurs with answers around the zoo trail. A café is here with plenty of undercover seating serving hot and cold snacks & drinks from opening until close. Hot meals just from 11.00am to 2.30pm.

Extremely special to the zoo are animals like the “Exmoor Beast” a black leopard, a shoebill (very much like a prehistoric velociraptor), fanaloka (two of only five in Europe), sand cats, dingoes, margay, cacomistles, binturong, wolverine, red panda and lots of familiar favourites such as meerkats and kangaroos!

A children’s playground helps let the smaller one’s release some of their energy. Deliberately, situated right next a covered picnic area and snack shack, so mum and dad can relax and keep an eye on their smaller people!

The zoo opens at 10.00am every morning all year except the 3 days of Xmas and closes at 5.00pm.

The animals are most active and on exhibit on normal days. They are used to the rain, sunshine, wind and cold but when it is extreme, they will seek shelter the same as you and me. Visitors rain shelters are created around the zoo trail along with seats and picnic tables.

Any when in Spring, Summer or Autumn, especially after May as the native Devon foliage wakes up from winter and the breeding cycles of the animals have started. A Winter visit needs to be on a good weather day.
