Exmoor Zoo

Exmoor Zoo is a local family friendly attraction. It is home to some unique and very unusual animals which can only be seen here and nowhere else in the UK! Located just off the A399 link road, it is less than twenty-five minutes away from Woolacombe Sands Holiday Park and is in the beautiful rural North Devon countryside alongside the Exmoor National Park.

Over 150 different species of animal can be seen on the zoo trail, from our Exmoor Beast who waits patiently to stalk you, or the snoozy Red Pandas up high. There are lots of unique animals for you to see, some you might not have even heard of like Shoebill Stork or Painted Dogs? We run activities throughout the day, all included in your admission ticket too. Some of these are encounter sessions which introduce you to special animals such as tarantulas and snakes.

There are kids quizzes every month aimed at supporting conservation and endangered animals, upon completing the quiz we offer a small gift bag for the children.

Our African café has lots of seating indoors and we also have plenty of undercover areas for picnickers. Hot food is served from 11.30am to 2.30pm with snacks & drinks from opening until close.

The Snack Shack is open next to our outdoor playground for the summer season, filled with ice creams, hot drinks and snacks to keep the parents going whilst the kids zoom around and burn off some energy. Theres lots of things to keep them occupied whilst you sip a cup of tea in the playground.

We have some extremely special animals like the “Exmoor Beast” a black Leopard, Shoebill, Binturong, Sand Cats, Dingoes, Wolverine, Red Panda, Cheetah and lots of familiar favourites such as Meerkats, Tapirs and Kangaroos! You could even walk across to terrapin island and see our new Lake exhibit with Pelicans, Spoonbills and Swamp Hens!

The zoo opens at 10.00am every morning all year except the 3 days of Xmas and closes at 5.00pm with last admissions 4pm in the main season.

Hints and Tips: The animals all have favourable times to be seen, most of the carnivores’ lounge after opening time and generally wake up in the afternoon. The Primates are generally always visible as they get fed through the day. But if its hot, like us they like to relax in the shade. If its raining they will seek shelter the same as you and me. Never fear if you can’t spot our animals the Zookeepers are always on hand to help you see their animals.

As we are an outside attraction, we have created a number of rain shelters around the zoo trail along with seats and picnic tables for you.

When visiting in Spring or Summer, especially after May the natural flora around the zoo wakes up and makes the zoo feel WILD as you search like an explorer for our animas! Will we see you soon?
