Sustainability
What are we doing?
At Woolacombe Sands Holiday Park, we are committed to moving our business forward as sympathetically as we can with sustainability in the forefront of our decisions.
We have changed the way we work over the last few years, proving big and little changes can make a huge impact to the environment.
Plastic Free North Devon
We support Plastic Free North Devon and their campaign to educate and reduce the use of single use plastic.
We made changes that have seen positive guest reactions:
- No single use plastic (straws, cutlery etc)
- Vegware biodegradable takeaway cartons and cutlery
- No single use sauce sachets
- We sell cans of drink in our shop, and where possible we do not sell plastic bottled single drinks
- We do not sell cheap polystyrene body boards
- Where possible we moved to items such as shampoo bars in cardboard packaging for sale, to reduce shower gel and shampoo bottle sales (these are still available)
- Moving from bottles to cans in the bar to reduce heavy recycling loads
What else?
We have implemented lots of changes...
- Our van fleet for maintenance, and house keeping are now all electric with on site charging. Only larger machinery and equipment is operated by fuel.
- Equipment such as chainsaws are being replaced by electrical devices when required.
- Guest electric vehicle charging stations were installed in 2019
- Recycling points have been increased around site, with a more regular collection.
- Locally sourced food where we can for our food & drinks menu
- Local suppliers are used where possible
- Items for sale such as fruit and veg come loose and are not wrapped in plastic where possible
- We encourage reusable jute bags to be bought and used, or for guests to bring along their own bags
- All caravans now have double glazing and central heating so that electric and gas consumption is less
- Sourcing and constructing bore holes for water with filtration systems
- On site house keeping department to have less items leaving site, and ensuring house keeping team members have job security
- Less printing. Welcome booklets and general information is now digital with no need for mass production of booklets and paper
- Boilers are upgraded where possible, so that energy ratings are observed and sustained
- Golf buggies that are electric are used on site for staff transport, as well as electric bikes!
- All windows in the main complex have been replaced in 2022, ensuring better heat retention where possible
- Bamboo reusable products are sold in our shop
- Solar panels were installed for 2023 on our chalets, which also had new installation and a complete refurbishment.
- 2024 future plans include more solar panels
